During second grade the students prepare to receive two sacraments. Their First Penance takes place in February and First Communion takes place in May. The students are always so excited to be receiving these two very special sacraments.
For each sacrament, the children start preparing about 2 months beforehand. They use their religion book to prepare and Father Joe also discusses important details with the children when he comes in to the classroom every week.
They have lengthy discussions about each sacrament and what they will be experiencing. The parents are also required to attend meetings prior to each sacrament to understand the important role that they have in their child’s preparation.
The second grade class completes six science units during the year. They start each year with a unit on weather, then move onto the five senses, the human body, the solar system, the ocean and bugs.
In March, the class has a week long Dr. Seuss unit. They read lots of Dr. Seuss books and participate in many additional fun activities. One of their favorites is making oobleck after they read the book Bartholomew and the Oobleck! It’s quite messy in the classroom but well worth it.
In April the second graders celebrate Earth Day by painting t-shirts with Earth Day slogans. They are allowed to wear their shirts at school to remind all students and teachers to care for the Earth.
